Can you drink water straight from your tap?
In many countries in Europe, you have clean water coming from your tap, ready to get you some hydration. But lots of people don’t. Here are some facts:
- One in ten people in the world drink water from unprotected water sources – this means that they are in the dark when it comes to the safety of the water, leaving them exposed to dangers to their health (Slaymaker & Bain, 2017)
- Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with the E Coli bacteria (faeces) (World Health Organisation, 2018)
- It is estimated that 83% of the water in the world is contaminated with plastic fibres (Orb media, 2017).
- Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the global population and is projected to increase. More than 1.7 billion people are currently living in river basins where water use exceeds recharge – an unsustainable situation for sure (UN, 2015).
Given these numbers, room for improvement might be an understatement. Do you have a great idea on how to get clean drinking water where people need it the most? Sign up for this competition!
